A Practical Checklist for International Relocation

International moves involve several parallel administrative processes. Missing a step, or doing things out of order, is one of the most common causes of delay.

Before you leave

  • Confirm visa or residency status and any conditions attached to it (work rights, dependents, time limits)
  • Check whether your destination country requires proof of address, funds, or accommodation before arrival
  • Research healthcare access: whether you are covered from day one, or need private insurance for a waiting period
  • Notify your current tax authority of your departure date, since this affects your tax residency status
  • Arrange international shipping or removals well in advance; customs clearance can take weeks

On arrival

  • Register with local authorities if required (many countries require this within a set number of days)
  • Open a local bank account; some require proof of address first, which can create a temporary chicken-and-egg problem worth planning around
  • Obtain a local phone number, since some services will not accept a foreign number for verification
  • Register with a local doctor or health service
  • If you have children, begin the school enrolment process as early as possible; some areas have long waiting lists

Within the first few months

  • Confirm your tax obligations in both your old and new country; many countries have tax treaties that prevent double taxation, but you usually have to file to claim the benefit
  • Transfer or establish credit history, since credit history rarely transfers automatically between countries
  • Review whether your existing insurance policies (life, disability, vehicle) remain valid

Requirements vary significantly by country and by visa category. Treat this as a general checklist, and confirm specific requirements with the relevant government agency or an immigration professional.
