Understanding Broadband and Mobile Coverage Data
Broadband and mobile coverage figures give a general picture of connectivity in an area, drawn from national regulator data rather than a guarantee of service at a specific address.
Where the figures come from
Coverage and speed data is compiled from information that network operators are required to report to the relevant national telecoms regulator, combined with technical modelling of signal propagation and infrastructure locations. This produces area-level estimates of what broadband speeds and mobile signal strength are typically available, rather than a live, address-by-address test.
Broadband speed figures
Reported broadband figures usually describe the maximum theoretical speed available from the underlying infrastructure serving an area (for example, whether full-fibre, part-fibre, or cable services reach that area), rather than the speed any individual household would actually experience, which depends on the specific package purchased and in-home factors such as wiring and Wi-Fi setup.
Mobile signal figures
Mobile coverage is typically reported per operator and per technology generation (4G, 5G), since coverage genuinely differs between networks in the same location. A property can have strong coverage from one operator and weak coverage from another, and indoor signal is usually somewhat weaker than outdoor signal due to building materials.
Why coverage varies over short distances
Terrain, building density, and distance from the nearest mast or cabinet all affect real-world signal and speed, so two addresses close together can show different practical experiences even when area-level data looks similar. This is a genuine feature of how radio signals and cable infrastructure behave, not a data error.
Questions worth asking
- Is the reported broadband speed a maximum theoretical figure, or an average of actual measured speeds?
- Does the mobile coverage figure reflect a specific operator, or an average across networks?
- Is the property in a location (rural, hilly, dense urban) where local variation from the area average is more likely?
